Trump voters of a certain ilk have tuned out the left’s hyperbolic rhetoric that was aimed as a rallying cry to spark collective action. Trump’s unwillingness to concede the election stress tested America’s representative democracy. If Mike Pence were not to have certified the vote and Georgia’s governor would have manipulated the ballot, Trump very well could have undermined democracy. And yet, many voters are willing to look past that he attempted to usurp the very power they hold in their democracy.

Similarly, although mass extinction combined with rising sea levels due to the rise of Co2 threatens a cascade of events that make the planet less habitable and food scarcer (if less beautiful), there is an awful lot of shoulder shrugging. Perhaps Bjørn Lomborg’s skeptic approach to climate change has them betting that someone will figure out how to cool the planet back down in time or invent a Jurassic Park-like technology. The logic of conceding power as a necessary condition to democracy and scientific data have lost their force. Instead of reason, there is deference to YouTube commentators, where anything that is plausible is credible.

The incredulous left and their hyperbolic rallying cries are not only failing to motivate, they’re alienating more people than they’re winning over. The message must be adapted to the skeptical audience. Reason, however, should not be traded off for fairy tales, no matter how tempting.
